Mountaineering Routes on Mount Shasta
This 14,000-foot volcano offers many stellar routes to its summit, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert. Each route ascends about 7,000 feet from start to summit, so they all require a large amount of physical fitness. The most difficult routes are also highly technical, involving navigation over glaciers, steep ice, or rock with fall exposure. The easier routes, however, need only a basic amount of technical know-how to be done safely. Here is a quick description of the typical routes on Shasta. See our blog post Climbing Mount Shasta for more information about each.
Avalanche Gulch: The most common route in both summer and winter, offering incredible views and relative ease of access on the south face of the mountain.
Clear Creek: A good option in mid to late season when Avalanche Gulch starts melting out, and a way to avoid the typical crowds.
Hotlum-Boldum: This route ascends the ridge splitting the Bolam and Hotlum glaciers, requiring some technical terrain in between sections of easier hiking.
Hotlum Glacier: The Hotlum is an advanced option for alpinists proficient in glacier travel, or for guided groups who are keen to learn the skills.
These are the routes typically used for climbing and descent during the summer climbing season. Mount Shasta is also a big winter destination for ski and snowboard mountaineers, who use different sets of tactics for summitting and descending the volcano.
