Mt. Sill

Easily one of the most beautiful peaks in America, Mt. Sill should be on any aspiring alpinist’s list! Mt. Sill is one of the most sought-after California 14er, and while the walk in is long it’s a worthy price to pay for this amazing mountain. The two main routes for Mt. Sill are: 

  • Swiss Arete III 5.7 6 pitches

  • North Couloir II 5.2 3 pitches steep snow

Course Objectives

Check off a 14er and climb to the summit of Mt. Sill.

Itinerary

Day 1: We’ll meet at the town of Big Pine at 8:30am, after a morning pack check and dispersing the group gear, we’ll caravan up to the Big Pine Creek overnight trailhead. Once our packs are on, we begin the six-mile hike into one of the campsites in Sam Mack Meadows.   

Day 2: Time to climb! Depending on the conditions, time of year, and group goals, we can begin the day anytime between 4 and 6am. Hiking up the final trail to gain the Palisades Glacier. After crossing the glacier, we approach a gully where we ascend upwards to the snowfield at the base of Mt. Sill. At this point we either climb the steep snow to the notch for the North Gully or cut climber’s left across the snow to the Swiss Arete. After climbing to the top we descend the North Gully back down to camp. 

Day 3: We wake up no later than 8am to have a breakfast and start the walk out!

Prerequisites

  • Must have experience following up a multi-pitch rock climb.

  • Experience lead belaying.
